The first play I worked on for projection design company The Gray Circle, Darker Shores is a darkly humourous period ghost story by Michael Punter set in a Victorian mansion by the sea. Hampstead Theatre’s production utilised a large window of sanded perspex on which we projected exterior backdrops and video of actors.

These included the story’s ghost character forever trapped outside, the garden’s tropical plants and my contribution: the supernatural stormy seascape evoked during a seance. This sequence was composited from real sea, sky and crashing wave footage from the extensive video library shot in-house by The Gray Circle.
